120th OULUN TERVAHIIHTO 7.3.2009
Since 1889 there has been an annual long distance ski race held in the Oulu area (even during the war years). In 2009 we will be doing it again for the 120th time making us the longest running annual long distance ski race in the world.We have races over 36km and 69km in both traditional and skating styles. What does Tervahiihto mean?In the past Oulu was a port city for the export of tar (produced from trees). Oulu was an ideal site for this because of the vast network of waterways that lead inland via the Oulu River. The word 'terva' means 'tar' and the word 'hiihto' means 'ski'.
